Facts at NATO's disposal show that a war has started between Ukraine and Russia, Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Raimonds Graube said in an interview with Latvian public television LTV on Monday.
"This military operation or war has begun. All facts in our and NATO's disposal, as well as logic proves it. This action cannot be called otherwise,"
the Chief of Defence said. Lieutenant General Graube indicated that international norms require a declaration of war. "This has not happened, but at any rate, forces of a foreign country are in another country's territory and waging war against this country's legitimate armed forces," Lieutenant General Graube explained.
The Chief of Defence said that Latvia's borders are being carefully watched. Russia has stepped up the activity of its warships near Latvia's borders, to which Latvia has responded by stepping up its sea patrols and the monitoring of the neighbor country's military vessels. Lieutenant General Graube also underlined the need to bolster Latvia's self-defense capabilities.
Pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine's southeast carried out theirs first attack on the Ukrainian Navy last Sunday, shelling an Ukrainian war ship in the Azov Sea, the Ukrainian armed forces reported.
