The EU Battlegroup of the 2nd National Guard battalion was tasked to set up an ambush within their area of responsibility to attack the adversary engineer unit and create the safe passage.
The company provides terrain reconnaissance in the area of enemy movement (here the engineer platoon), resolve on the deployment of troops and transport, laying of antipersonnel mines and the establishment of fire support positions to neutralize the enemy and avoid or minimize their own casualties.
Tactically, the company is tasked to check and destroy the opposing force. ‘Although this is one of the conventional warfare tactical elements, it is rarely carried out at company-level,’ says training area director and 1st Region National Guard chief of HQ training and planning section Captain Viktors Kareckis, ‘It is a challenge for the company and for us who are in charge of the training site.
According to Captain Kareckis, the anticipation phase is one of the challenges of the ambush lane. The ambush preparation is time-consuming while the specialists set up land mines before the ambush is initiated and the opposing force (here Land Force Infantry brigade soldiers) is attacked. Combat support battalion provides support to the company size unit in setting up the land mines.
Captain Kareckis admits that the National Guard Company assigned for the duty in the EU Battlegroup shows combat readiness for conventional warfare and is prepared to conduct such tactical tasks. So, this task does not overstretch them. ‘Every soldier is trained in basic conventional tactic,’ noted captain Kareckis.
According to Company Commander Captain Edgars Kairišs, although the National Guard soldiers participated in the EU Battlegroup testing camp in Great Britain just a week ago, they are ready to take part in this exercise and accomplish the tasks different from those they will be assigned to conduct as part of the EU Battlegroup.
The mission of the company was to neutralize the enemy unit without compromising their own troops. The contact was made, the tactical task was accomplished and the coy suffered minimum casualties – one soldier wounded. The company withdrew to their meeting point.
